2020 Graduation Speech
Good Morning,
On behalf of Richardson Middle Schools’ Administration, Faculty, Staff and Local School Council I send our greetings to the Richardson Middle School Class of 2020 and to your family and friends on this the joyous occasion of your 8th grade graduation. I am Marie Clouston, the Proud Principal of Richardson Middle School.
While this may not be the commencement ceremony we envisioned at the beginning of the school year, we have more reason than ever to celebrate this accomplished milestone of our Richardson graduates. Our students have proven that during this unprecedented time, their final chapter as a Rhino would not be remembered for the moments they missed, but instead they would be known for their spirit, courage, and ability to persevere. They have exemplified what it means to be a Richardson Rhino and I could not be more proud of this young group of leaders.
That being said, adaptability and change are themes that our students have experienced in their journey over the last three and half years. This class came to Richardson Middle School in January 2017 when the doors first opened. You left behind a school that some of you had made your home since kindergarten. You welcomed the change of a new beginning in a new middle school environment. In true Rhino fashion, you did so with courage and filled the halls with optimism and entered the doors with a passion to learn. Today as you close this chapter of your life, I ask you to start the next chapter in the same way, with courage and great expectations of yourself to achieve all of your dreams.
While you all embraced your transition to being a Rhino, you also have encouraged a new standard within the culture of Richardson Middle School. We have assembled a Student Voice Committee where your concerns are heard and addressed by your administration. Twelve of your graduating peers are members of the Junior National Honor Society, which not only promotes academic achievement, but also carries out meaningful community service projects like assisting at the Ronald McDonald House and Food Pantry to highlight a few beneficiaries of their service. Our students initiated school-wide changes such as independent 8th grade class schedules that allowed you all to move not as a group but as an individual owning responsibility for your own learning. Lastly, and most recently, you conquered the huge challenge of adapting to a remote learning environment and learning how to virtually engage with your teachers and fellow classmates. Each graduate pushed through any obstacle or previously imposed limitation to prove that they have surpassed their own expectations this school year.
All these actions took courage, but you did it! You will need to continue to display that courage and resiliency as you boldly go into the future with the same growth mindset and work ethic that Richardson has cultivated.
To the parents of our graduating 8th graders, words cannot express my deepest appreciation and gratitude for your continued support and involvement in our school and our shared mission. I believe that what sets Richardson apart from all other schools is the active involvement and attentive care that you invest in our community’s youth through support of their education. Thank you for sharing with us, your most precious gifts your children and for entrusting us with their education and personal development. It has been a privilege to get to know your children and witness their progress over the years.
To the faculty and staff of Richardson Middle School, some of whom came with the students from their respective elementary school and others who have joined us over the years, thank you for sharing your knowledge, passion, and gift of teaching. You are a remarkably diverse and resilient group of dedicated professionals that provided our students with a challenging and safe space to excel and succeed. Thank you for acting as a constant pillar of support for your students and fellow faculty members. You have navigated the challenges of change and the unknown and never wavered in your commitment to our students or Richardson Middle School.
To the graduating class of 2020, while there will be many firsts ahead of you, there will also be many more milestones you set out to achieve. I hope you take advantage of every opportunity afforded to you and be mindful that change and uncertainty have never deterred you in the past. Remember to always do your B.E.S.T: behave appropriately, excel in all you do, show respect and treat others with kindness.

Buenos dias,
De parte de la Administración, Facultad, Personal y el Concilio Escolar Local, les envío saludos a la clase del año 2020 de Richardson Middle School, a sus familias y amigos en esta ocasión feliz que es su graduación de octavo grado. Mi nombre es Marie Clouston y soy orgullosamente la directora de la escuela Richardson Middle School.
Claro está, esta no es la ceremonia de graduación que imaginamos al comienzo del año escolar, y por eso tenemos más razones que nunca para celebrar este logro por parte de nuestros graduados de Richardson. Nuestros estudiantes han demostrado que durante este tiempo sin precedentes, su capítulo final como Rhinos, no sería recordado por los momentos que perdieron, sino que sería reconocido por su espíritu, valentía y capacidad de perseverar. Han ejemplificado lo que significa ser un Richardson Rhino y yo no podría estar más orgullosa de este grupo joven de líderes.
Dicho esto, la adaptabilidad y el cambio son temas que nuestros estudiantes han experimentado en su viaje durante los últimos tres años y medio. Esta clase llegó a Richardson Middle School en enero de 2017 cuando se abrieron las puertas por primera vez. Dejaron atrás una escuela que algunos de ustedes habían considerado su hogar desde el jardín de infantes. Ustedes acogieron el cambio de un nuevo comienzo en un nuevo ambiente de una escuela intermedia. Al verdadero estilo Rhino, lo hicieron con valentía y llenaron los pasillos con optimismo y entraron por la puerta con una pasión para aprender. Hoy, al cerrar este capítulo de su vida, les pido que comiencen el próximo capítulo de la misma manera. Con valentía y con grandes expectativas de sí mismos para lograr todos sus sueños.
Si bien, mientras todos adoptaron su transición a ser un Rhino, también alentaron un nuevo estándar dentro de la cultura de Richardson Middle School. Hemos reunido un Comité de Voz Estudiantil donde su administración escucha y aborda sus inquietudes. Doce de sus compañeros graduados son miembros de Junior Honor Society, que no solo promueve el logro académico, sino también lleva a cabo proyectos significativos de servicio comunitario como ayudar en la Casa Ronald McDonald y en la Dispensa de Alimentos, solo para destacar algunos beneficiarios de su servicio. Nuestros estudiantes iniciaron cambios en toda la escuela, como horarios de clases independientes de 8vo grado que les permitió a todos moverse no como un grupo, sino como una responsabilidad individual de su propio aprendizaje. Por último, y más recientemente, conquistaron el enorme desafío de adaptarse a un entorno de aprendizaje remoto y aprender a interactuar virtualmente con sus maestros y compañeros de clase. Cada graduado supero cualquier obstáculo o limitación impuesta previamente para demostrar que han superado sus propias expectativas este año escolar.
Todas estas acciones tomaron valor! Pero lo lograron! Deberán continuar mostrando ese valor y resistencia a medida que avancen con valentía hacia el futuro con la misma mentalidad de crecimiento y ética de trabajo que en Richardson han cultivado.
Para los padres de nuestros graduados de octavo grado, las palabras no pueden expresar mi más profundo agradecimiento y gratitud por su continuo apoyo y participación en nuestra escuela y nuestra misión compartida.
Creo que lo que distingue a Richardson de todas las demás escuelas es la participación activa y la atención atenta que ustedes invierten en los jóvenes de nuestra comunidad a través del apoyo de su educación. Gracias por compartir con nosotros sus regalos más preciados, sus hijos, y por confiarnos su educación y desarrollo personal. Ha sido un privilegio conocer a sus hijos y presenciar su progreso a lo largo de los años.

Ustedes han navegado los desafíos del cambio y lo desconocido pero nunca han flaqueado en su compromiso con nuestros estudiantes o con la escuela Richardson Middle School.
Para la clase de graduación de 2020, aunque habrá muchas novedades por delante de usted, también habrá muchos más logros. Espero que aprovechen cada oportunidad que se les brinde y tenga en cuenta que el cambio y la incertidumbre nunca los disuadió en el pasado. Recuerden de siempre hacer su B.E.S.T: comportarse adecuadamente, sobresalir en todo lo que haga, mostrar respeto y tratar a los demás con amabilidad.
